March 30 is designated National Doctors’ Day—and it is being celebrated this week with events that are a tangible expression of appreciation for our physicians and advanced practice providers. At Adventist Healthcare, we are appreciative and proud of these skilled and gifted professionals who provide care to our patients and our community. They embody our mission and are integral to our success.
It was Dr. Albert Schweitzer, himself a physician, who articulated the care process so well when he wrote, “At times our own light goes out and is rekindled by a spark from another person. Each of us has cause to think with deep gratitude of those who have lighted the flame within us.”
Our patients often feel that healing was “rekindled by a spark” that came from their physician. Physicians are well aware of the expectations that accompany their work. It is tremendously challenging to work in an environment where nothing is ever routine—and where issues of life and death are present at every moment. Throughout healthcare, we have become very aware of the personal costs that physicians take on as they partner with us to “extend God’s care through the ministry of physical, mental and spiritual healing.”
It is a privilege for us to share in this work, and it is appropriate for us to take this moment each year to express our gratitude. In this small way, perhaps we may rekindle the flame of hope and sustained commitment in the lives of the physicians and advanced practice providers who serve our communities—and our organization—so well.
Thank you! We are standing for you on National Doctors’ Day, even as you stand with us in hope and healing every day.
