This is Hospital Week 2017, the week in which we take special note of the extraordinary centers for healing and community health that comprise our core endeavor, and an opportunity to recognize and say thank you to all of our employees.

I stumble a bit over saying “Hospital Week” out loud, because of how it sounds. I far prefer the sound of “Hospital Strong,” because of what it means.

Hospital Strong is what happens when talented, skilled, experienced, and committed team members come together in our institutions. Hospital Strong means striving for the best possible treatment and therapeutic outcomes for our patients. Hospital Strong means acting with courage and commitment to meet the health challenges of our community.

Hospital Strong means embracing the challenges of accessibility and availability—24/7. Hospital strong means creating and sustaining the environments that engender healing, health, and hope. Hospital Strong means being the people and places that our communities can depend on.

Hospital Strong means understanding the infinite worth of each individual, and being conscientious and trustworthy in how we relate to our patients and our work. Hospital Strong means embracing service as a calling, and being compassionate in our care for our patients and one another. Hospital Strong means constantly reaching for excellence in fulfilling our sacred mission to see ourselves as agents of God’s care.

Hospital Strong means digging deep into our own emotional reserves as we accompany our patients and those they love on life’s most intense journeys.

To each of our Adventist HealthCare team members—thank you for helping make us Hospital Strong.

National Hospital Week is a celebration of what can happen when effective teamwork is focused on the best interests of our patients. It is a promise that the strengths brought by our team to our hospitals will be a ready and able part of meeting the needs of our community for a long time to come.

Our work isn’t easy, but it is worthy of our talents and commitment. It is truly exhilarating and rewarding when the results of Hospital Strong are seen in healthier lives for those we serve. Our gratitude and appreciation is very real, and I’m proud to be a part of the Adventist HealthCare team. National Hospital Week is all about our Hospitals Strong.
