This week, we were excited to welcome Germantown Girl Scout Troop 3156 to Adventist HealthCare Shady Grove Medical Center. This “daisy” troop of 11 seven-year-old girls visited the hospital’s pediatric emergency department and pediatric unit to donate books and bookmarks to children in our hospital.
We were the last stop on the troop’s fourth “journey” patch of “5 Flowers, 4 Stories, 3 Cheers for Animals.”
Prior to visiting the hospital, the girls met and brought in their favorite book from home, read a page to the troop and explained why it was their favorite. They then finger painted poster board, which they turned into bookmarks. As a group, they decided to donate the bookmarks and books they no longer read to other children.
“We felt that children who were in bed or waiting in the ER for a long time would enjoy the books the most to help pass time,” said the troop leader. “Thanks again so much for allowing us the opportunity and helping us complete our final journey!”
By donating the books and homemade bookmarks, the troop fulfilled the “Stories” part of the patch. This taught them about the importance and enjoyment of reading.
As part of their visit, several nurses also showed them the behind-the-scenes look into our pediatric emergency department and pediatric unit.
Thank you, Troop 3156, for your generous gift to children in our hospital.
