“It’s hard to believe that it has been over a year since I had my heart valve replaced by the caring people at Adventist HealthCare Washington Adventist Hospital,” said Susan Stup, of Highland, Md. Since then, Susan has seen the birth of her youngest grandson in June and is a part of her grandkids’ daily lives.

Minimally invasive heart surgery got Susan Stup well enough to help with her grandchildren.

Minimally invasive heart surgery got Susan Stup well enough to help with her grandchildren.

“When I had my heart surgery, I didn’t know at the time that he [her youngest grandson] would be a part of my life. I love being able to enjoy all of my grandchildren’s activities and thank God I am close enough to be a part of their lives,” said Stup.

It was just over a year ago that the heart experts at Washington Adventist Hospital diagnosed Stup with aortic stenosis – a narrowing of the heart valve between the heart and the blood vessel that carries blood to the body.

Anthony Rongione, MD, a heart surgeon and medical director of Cardiac Surgery at Washington Adventist Hospital, was able to replace Stup’s heart valve through minimally invasive heart surgery, instead of the usual open-heart procedure. With a dramatically smaller incision and quicker recovery, Stup was able to attend a family party just four days after returning home from the hospital.

Now, Stup is feeling so much better and back to her usual activities, including watching her 11-year-old granddaughter, Grace, perform in dance shows and competitions. Just last spring, Grace’s studio performed the ballet “Sleeping Beauty.” Stup is quick to tell you that her two middle grandsons, ages 6 and 7, excel in Tae Kwon Do, soccer and bike riding.

“My grandchildren are the loves of my life,” said Susan, who is grateful to be well enough to see and help them grow.

If four grandchildren weren’t enough to keep her busy, Susan also breeds labradoodles and has five dogs of her own!

Thanks to the heart experts at Washington Adventist Hospital, Susan can care for her puppies and her grandkids with confidence that she won’t miss a beat.
