Go beyond the white coat and get to know Mitra Hashemi, MD, an internal medicine physician with Adventist HealthCare Adventist Medical Group in Silver Spring, MD. Find out how she became a doctor and read her advice on how to live a healthier life.
Q: Did you always want to be a doctor?
Dr. Hashemi: I had a lot of exposure to medicine when I was a child. My father was a family medicine physician and his office was a separate building attached to our house. He had a very busy practice and really enjoyed his job. Also, practicing medicine was what my older sister and brothers chose as a career. For me, I didn’t fall in love with medicine right away. When I started medical school and my residency, my passion began and grew more and more.
Q: What drew you to internal medicine?
Dr. Hashemi: Internal medicine, especially primary care, is the frontline in helping the community to stay healthier. Also, developing a relationship with my patients over their lives is very important to me so that I can be a trusted partner in their health.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of your work?
Dr. Hashemi: The reward is huge. I love helping my patients to have a better understanding of their medical conditions and helping them learn what to do moving forward. It’s rewarding to diagnose conditions like cancer in its early stages or helping a patient with depression or anxiety. The list goes on.
Q: What are some hobbies that you enjoy in your spare time?
Dr. Hashemi: I enjoy spending time with my family. I consider my husband as my best friend. Our two sons are amazing and they bring so much happiness to our lives every day. I also like traveling, reading books and going to the gym. I started to learn a new instrument at the age of 40 –the piano. I’m also hoping to start painting portraits again when my children are older.
Q: If you could give your patients one tip to live a happier and healthier life, what would it be?
Dr. Hashemi: Life has its challenges but how we deal with them is what matters. Life is too short, so try to get the most out of it. Cherish every moment. Keep in touch with your family and friends. Explore. Every day when you wake up, feel like it’s a new day.
