Go beyond the white coat and get to know Avni Jain, MD, a family medicine physician with Adventist HealthCare Adventist Medical Group in Germantown, MD. Find out how she became a doctor and read her advice on how to live a healthier life.
Q: Did you always want to be a doctor?
Dr. Jain: I always wanted to be a doctor. I couldn’t see myself being anything else. My father is a physician, and I appreciated his dedication to his profession. I would accompany him to his office and in the operating room to watch his procedures. Those experiences intrigued me. As I grew older, my interest grew towards medicine because I also wanted to help others by alleviating their pain and suffering.
Q: Why did you choose family medicine?
Dr. Jain: After finishing medical school in India, I did clinical rotations with great family medicine physicians in Minnesota who were instrumental in my decision. As a family medicine physician, I connect with not just the patient but the entire family. Caring for people of all ages keeps me interested and challenged in my career. I care for the pregnant mother, the newborn infant and the 90-year-old patient.
Q: What is the most rewarding part of your work?
Dr. Jain: The most rewarding part of my work is when my patients tell me they love to see me, especially if they usually don’t enjoy visiting the doctor. Treating patients is more than just a job I perform. I work for my patients and I choose to serve them. I have chosen a lifestyle where I can go home and feel happy at the end of the day because I have helped someone else. Each day is nothing short of a small miracle for me.
Q: What are some hobbies you enjoy in your spare time?
Dr. Jain: I’m a very busy mom of two boys. They play basketball and I love to go to their games. In fact, I am one of the most enthusiastic moms on the sidelines! I like to cook Indian meals and other types of cuisines for my family. I also love singing Indian music – it is a huge stress buster for me. Plus, I enjoy traveling with my family.
Q: If you could give your patients one tip to live a happier and healthier life, what would it be?
Dr. Jain: You are stronger than you think. If you make up your mind to take care of your health, you can do it. For example, if you make up your mind to lose the weight and take care of your diabetes, you can do it. Believe in yourself!
